Before you go out and market your site, you have to lay a little groundwork first. Once your page is online, before you even start announcing it, WWW Robots could be creeping all over it!
WWW Robots are programs that roam the Web looking at HTML documents, and collecting data about them into their databases. They scan your page, and summarize it into keywords and a description. Your page is stored in their database so that when someone searches their database for your topic, hopefully your page and an accompanying description should come up. What you want is that each robot properly indexes and summarizes your web page. This is not as simple as it seems, as different robots use differ ent methods to summarize your page. Here are the things you need to put in your HTML documents to ensure they're best read by robots.
Use the META "Description" and META "keyword" tags in all your major HTML documents. The Description tag can be a couple of sentences, but put all the important information in the first sentence. This is for two reasons: people have short attention spans, particu larly on the Internet and some search engines only display the first line or two of your description. As for keywords, think of what words a user would enter into a search engine if they were looking for a document like yours.
However, not all robots use the META tags to summarise your page. Many take the first visible text on your page. You need to put a paragraph at the beginning of your pages that sums up the page's material, in less than 250 characters. You need to load this paragraph with keywords that people would use if wanting to find your site.
Robots can look for keywords in different places: in the title of your HTML page, sometimes it reviews the entire page or some read your HTML source. To cover these, create descriptive, carefully wor ded titles, use your keywords throughout your documents and add comments to your HTML source filled with keywords.
Meta attribute
A versatile attribute used in the HEAD element is the META attribute. While it can be used for various purposes, at this point we'll look at two functions: the Description META Tag provides a concise description of your HTML document, and the Keywords META Tag provides a collection of key words associated with the subject of your document. These Meta Tags are used in the HEAD element of your document, in the following form:
...the rest of document ...
These are invisible to a user viewing your site, but essential when your HTML document is "checked out" by WWW Robots.
